How to Make a Kitchen the Hub of Your Home

How to Make a Kitchen the Hub of Your Home

Our kitchens are the social hub of our homes. It’s where we slave over the hob and cook meals the kids “don’t like” and the room we gather and socialise in with friends and family so it’s vital the design of our kitchen is fit for purpose and suits all our needs and aesthetic tastes!!

Kitchens By Design, specialists in the kitchen design field creating beautiful kitchens to suit all tastes and styles provided us with inside knowledge and tips.

What worktop material do you believe is most suitable for the home?
Our Clients really love our solid surfaces, they give the luxury feel with functionality to match.

Do you have any tips on how to light a kitchen?
Lighting is now very much part of the designing process - we always think a plinth light and above cupboard lighting can easily create a dramatic look. We also like to add lighting into an island or social area.

Kitchens have evolved over time, the storage options, finishes and layouts have come a long way. The colours are definitely more muted than the kitchens we saw in the 50’s and anything other than a fitted kitchen isn’t an option. We like stylish storage containers for our tea and coffee, beautiful chopping boards which will never get close to the sharp end of a knife and accessories to fill our shelves. These are the things which turn a kitchen into the core of the home and a lifeless space into a homely hub.

What is the most popular current trend?
The most popular current
trend has to be ‘greys’ but we are starting to see indigo blue - our clients all vary with door styles from shaker through to our sleek handless door - it just depends on the final look they want to create.

Have you seen a rise in popularity in alternative metal finishes to chrome in the last few years?
Chrome is still very popular but a lot of our clients have been swayed very much towards our rose gold collection as well as the black handles.

You can revamp an existing kitchen at low cost. Paint the doors a dramatic grey or blue and purchase inexpensive door handles to add some contrast. Or you can start from scratch and make the most of the space with the latest pull out cupboard systems and choose from a selection of beautiful door and worktop finishes. I am sure we would all prefer to do the latter but either way we can turn a dreary kitchen into something amazing and we will offer some tips on how you can do so -

Keep your worktop sides clear of ‘stuff’ to ensure the focus is on the items you want people to see, so make sure they are beautiful and worth looking at! There are some amazing storage containers on the market to suit all design schemes whether you are looking for a particular finish or system. We also have ‘display only’ items in our kitchens which is where we can go a little crazy and display the thing’s we like which make us happy – plants, photo frames, ornaments.

These are some of the storage jars we found and love!

 Next – Glass Storage Jar £6 & £7

Make the most of the space whatever the size. Lots of storage, shelving and if you can squeeze an island in a space which would be otherwise wasted. The more storage the better and there are so many clever storage solutions on the market making our drawers and cupboards tidier. Open shelving not only acts as storage, it is a great way to make your favourite possessions a feature. This is where you can display your beautiful photo frames, trailing plants, treasured recipe books and general accessories. It is also a great excuse to buy yourself some new additions!

Is there a must have storage solution all homes should incorporate?
Storage solutions are a must now, depending on the design it could be the fabulous pull out larder or the Leman’s corner storage unit.
